Construction is underway to install our te-cyc™ enhanced biological nutrient removal technology at the new and innovative onsite Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) at The Hoplands, a community of homes in Canterbury.
The works is being constructed by Severn Trent subsidiary ST Connect, for leading housebuilder Redrow, to treat domestic wastewater from Redrow’s new Hoplands housing development in Hersden. Erection of the glass coated steel balancing and reaction tanks has been completed. They are the heart of the plant which treats domestic sewage, providing enhanced nutrient removal.
Protecting Stodmarsh Nature Reserve
The new facility will remove phosphates and nitrates to protect the nearby Stodmarsh Nature Reserve SSSI and other areas across the Great Stour catchment. This not only meets Natural England’s nutrient neutrality goals but means that Hoplands residents will benefit from a reduction to their wastewater utility bill and dedicated maintenance of public wastewater drainage at the site.
ST Connect selected our te-cyc™ enhanced sequencing batch reactor technology to meet the tight total nitrogen and phosphorus consents (10mgN/l and 0.3mgP/l). In addition to the core te-cyc™ process package, we are also responsible for the design and manufacture of the site wide MCC and control system. About the onsite WwTW, William Mackveley, General Manager at Severn Trent Connect, said:
“We’re very excited to be the first water company to enable a new development by meeting the stringent nutrient neutrality limits using an on-site works. The odourless, chemical-free and quiet works has been designed to be discreet and unobtrusive in keeping with the rural environment of the development.”
The overall project is based on a truly collaborative design and delivery approach between ST Connect and Te-Tech Process Solutions. The installation of pumps, aeration blowers, valves and pipework has now been started and the project is expected to be complete in early 2024.
